EXCLUSIVE | 'Harassment Is Popular Culture', Says Tanushree Dutta In Interview To Arnab Goswami

Tanushree Dutta's recent allegations against veteran actor Nana Patekar has sent shockwaves across the Hindi film industry. The actress spoke about the traumatic incident that took place back in 2008 on the sets of 'Horn Ok Pleassss', which resulted in Tanushree Dutta accusing Nana Patekar of alleged sexual misconduct. As fate would have it, this news resurfaced a decade later, and shortly after the 'Me Too' movement in Hollywood that created waves in the west. 

The issue that has taken a legal turn is taking its course with Nana Patekar holding a press conference in the next few days. Each day sees new developments in the Tanushree Dutta-Nana Patekar row and several eminent Bollywood celebrities have extended their support to Tanushree. The actress has been praised for her courage about speaking up and coming out in the open setting an example for all the wronged women out there. 

There were all sorts of questions raised by people against the actress and one in specific was about her blowing the incident out of proportion.  Tanushree Dutta exclusively spoke at length with Republic TV's Editor-in-chief, Arnab Goswami, and addressed the question and stated, 

"In our country, women have for time immemorial have been told to not make a big deal about harassment, harassment is ingrained in our country and our system. We have movies, old movies I remember as a child watching them, and thinking to my self that this is weird, this guy(referring to the actors) is behaving like this with the girl in the song and then she marries him, she falls in love with that guy! Harassment is popular culture, and people are told to keep shut about it, even rape victims and survivors are asked to keep shut about it and shove everything under the carpet, that is the culture, that is the mindset. There is so much shame and stigma, that gets associated with a victim! Shouldn't it be the other way round? Shouldn't it be somebody who is doing something horrendous to another person, be accountable to themselves and they should be ashamed."
