Puducherry: The residents in Puducherry will be getting 20 litres of safe drinking water in cans free of charge to households in areas struggling with poor water quality.
According to the Puducherry PWD Minister K Lakshminarayanan, the free supply of water will come into effect from April 14.
The announcement came after concerns raised by Independent MLA G. Nehru (Kuppusamy) during the legislative assembly's question hour about the substandard quality of water.
Lakshminarayanan said to mitigate this issue, water drawn from borewells with high Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) content is being blended with water from other borewells that have permissible TDS levels. This blended water is then supplied to households.
Meanwhile, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has implemented stricter rules for the distribution of free water tankers after reports of misuse by contractors.
Typically, the city is allocated 1,400 free tanker trips, with 1,000 designated for fixed purposes and 400 reserved for emergency or temporary needs. However, an investigation found that a significant number of these 400 emergency trips were being carried out without proper authorization.
Also in Karnataka, Congress government is considering a hike in water tariffs, further burdening Bengaluru residents financially.
Earlier on Friday, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar announced that the government is contemplating a rise of one paise per litre in water rates, explaining that the city's water tariffs have remained unchanged since 2014.
