New Delhi: As Holi celebrations bring a riot of colors across the country, several state governments have declared March 14 a dry day. This means liquor sales are prohibited in many states to ensure peaceful festivities. The ban applies not only to liquor shops but also to bars, restaurants, and retail outlets serving alcohol. Officials say the decision is aimed at maintaining law and order and preventing alcohol-related incidents during the festival.
In Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), including Noida and Gurugram, all liquor outlets remain shut for the day. As per government orders, no alcohol is being sold across the region. District Magistrates of Ghaziabad and Noida have also issued directives enforcing the dry day, citing public safety concerns and the need to curb alcohol-related brawls during Holi.
Maharashtra has also enforced a liquor ban today. However, authorities had allowed an extended sale period of 1.5 hours on March 13, giving residents extra time to buy alcohol before the dry day. According to Maharashtra excise officials, the move was aimed at preventing illegal sales and black marketing of liquor during the ban period.
While no official notification has been issued by authorities in Bengaluru, reports suggest the city is likely observing a dry day due to the national holiday. Many liquor shops have voluntarily shut down in adherence to previous year’s patterns as per multiple media reports.
In Hyderabad, Rachakonda Police Commissioner G. Sudheer Babu announced that all liquor shops, wine shops, and bars would remain closed from 6 am to 6 pm on March 14. The restriction is intended to prevent alcohol-induced disturbances during the Holi festivities.
With authorities closely monitoring the situation, residents in these regions must plan their celebrations accordingly.
