Even as the opposition is attacking the government over the alleged snooping outside ousted CBI director Alok Verma’s residence, IB, after the MHA, has denied the snooping allegations.

Even as the opposition is attacking the government over the alleged snooping outside ousted CBI director Alok Verma’s residence, IB, after the MHA, has denied the snooping allegations. IB sources have told Republic TV that IB generally conducts routine patrolling in sensitive areas to collect intelligence inputs. The IB sources said that patrolling in Janpath was carried out as there was an unusual collection of people and it was done with a view to check the reason why these people had gathered at the location.

This is a high security zone, where several protectees reside, said the IB, adding, Unfortunately, their presence was projected otherwise’.

‘This is unlike surveillance, which is done covertly without any visible appurtenances,’ said the IB sources.

The sources further said that the IB is entrusted with the responsibility of collecting intelligence on situations that may affect, inter alia public order and internal security. Among other things, its units are routinely deployed on a regular basis in sensitive areas, said the sources, adding at times, this is done in association with local law enforcement agencies and

The IB also said that the official who were found outside Alok Verma’s residence were at routine duties and were carrying their identity cards.

Earlier in the day, the MHA also denied snooping on Alok Verma's residence. MHA sources have said that to snoop on individuals and that too on a senior person as Verma, there are far better techniques. The MHA has termed it a regular patrol, saying several important individuals reside on the same road, including the NSA and former PM Manmohan Singh.

Earlier in the day, four men in plain clothes were detained outside ousted CBI Boss Alok Verma’s residence. In the visuals accessed, the men can be seen running after being confronted by the cops. The detained men have claimed to be the part of the Intelligence Bureau.

Amid row between the number 1 and number 2 at CBI, the Centre on the recommendation of CVC appointed Joint Director M Nageshwar Rao as the interim CBI director in an unprecedented move. Nageshwar Rao took charge as the CBI Interim Director around 2 am this morning, as per the sources.

Both Alok Verma and Rakesh Asthana have been asked to step aside till investigation is complete, as per the recommendation of the CVC. The Superintendence of investigation is under CVC as per the law. The CVC has said that since there are charges and counter charges both have to step aside for a fair investigation. Top government sources have said that those questioning the government decision must clarify whether they want anarchy.
