New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written to Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor to Bangladesh's interim government, extending his wishes on the country's Independence Day and reaffirming India's commitment to strengthening the partnership between the two nations.
"Excellency, I extend my felicitations to you and the people of Bangladesh on the occasion of the National Day of Bangladesh," the Prime Minister wrote.
"This day stands as a testament to our shared history and sacrifices, which have formed the foundation of our bilateral partnership. The spirit of the Liberation War of Bangladesh continues to guide our relationship, which has prospered across various sectors, bringing tangible benefits to our people," he added.
"We remain committed to advancing this partnership, driven by our common aspirations for peace, stability, and prosperity, and based on mutual sensitivity to each other's interests and concerns. Please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration," the Prime Minister further stated.
Amid strained relations between Delhi and Dhaka, the relationship between the two countries has become tense following the overthrow of the Awami League government, led by India's long-time ally Sheikh Hasina, after a nationwide movement. The former Prime Minister was forced to flee to India, and the interim government formed after this shift is led by Nobel laureate and economist Muhammad Yunus.
In the midst of reports of attacks on minorities, India expressed its concerns to Bangladesh, to which Dhaka responded that the attacks were politically motivated rather than communal.
External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar has stated that the Centre is in regular communication with the interim government and will continue to address such issues.
In December, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri visited Bangladesh to raise New Delhi's concerns over the attacks on minorities. In a meeting with Bangladeshi Foreign Adviser Mohammad Touhid Hossain, Mr. Misri expressed that the attacks on religious institutions and places of worship were "regrettable."
India's relationship with Bangladesh is rooted in its support for the neighboring country's liberation from Pakistan in 1971. Dhaka holds strategic significance for Delhi on a geopolitical level, and the two countries also share strong trade ties.
