Ahmedabad: The death toll in one of India's worst aviation disasters has risen to 270, with search and recovery teams continuing to scour the site of the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into a medical college hostel in a residential area of the city minutes after takeoff on June 12, killing at least 241 people on board and 29 on the ground. Surprisingly, one passenger onboard the flight survived the crash and is undergoing treatment at the hospital.
According to the officials, the recovery teams worked through the night to find more bodies in the debris, and by late Friday, they had found at least 25 more bodies.
As per reports, Dr Dhaval Gameti at the Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad said the facility had received 270 bodies, and the lone surviving passenger was still under observation for some of his wounds. "He is doing very well and will be ready to be discharged anytime soon," Gameti said.
The concerned officials stated that hundreds of relatives of the crash victims have provided DNA samples at the hospital to help identify the bodies. However, some relatives have expressed frustration with the process, saying it is taking too long. Meanwhile, the officials have said it normally takes up to 72 hours to complete DNA matching, but they are expediting the process.
The Indian government has formed a high-level, multi-disciplinary committee to examine the causes leading to the crash. The committee will focus on formulating procedures to prevent and handle aircraft emergencies in the future. The government is also inspecting Air India's entire fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, with eight of the 34 aircraft already undergoing inspection.
The investigating team have recovered the plane's digital flight data recorder, or the black box, which is expected to reveal crucial information about the cause of the accident. The device is expected to provide information about the engine and control settings, while the voice recorder will provide cockpit conversations.
The crash has raised concerns about the safety of Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. As per experts, the 787 has a good safety record, with over 1200 aircraft in service worldwide. However, the incident in Ahmedabad was the first deadly crash in 16 years of operation. The ongoing investigation is focused on determining whether the crash was due to a technical fault or human error.
Further details regarding the deadliest plane crash are awaited.
