New Delhi: India’s current Covid cases stand little over 1,000 mark amid a recent surge in the infections led by a new variant of coronavirus. The symptoms of new Covid variant are similar to cold or flu, as per medical experts.

The government is focussing on transmission, surveillance, preparedness but the variant which is driving new Covid cases have symptoms like Omicron, ANI quoted Dr Rajiv Bahl, DG, ICMR.

The government and health agencies are closely monitoring COVID-19 cases and taking necessary steps. Currently, the number of active cases is low, and most cases are limited to southern and western India. The government is focusing on three key factors. The rate of transmission and the rapidly increasing cases. Whether the virus is evading our natural and vaccine-induced immunity. Whether the current infections are more severe than before or have mild symptoms like Omicron, Dr Bahl said.

“Surveillance is underway to determine the reasons behind the increase in cases, and the government is making necessary preparations. The four variants that we have found are sub-variants of Omicron -- LF.7, XFG, JN," Dr Bahl informed.

The new variant of Covid — LF.7, XFG, JN.1 and NB. 1.8.1 — which is having Omicron-like symptoms are spreading in several states including Kerala, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Delhi-NCR, among others.

According to the Ministry of Heath and Family Welfare Government of India, there are 1,010 new Covid cases in the country as of May 26, 2025.

However, the situation in the country is under control as authorities across the states are keeping a strict vigil and prepared with better hospital management including facilitates like oxygen, ventilators, and beds.

Further according to the government data, the country has reported 6 Covid deaths so far. Among 6 people who have died, 3 are from Maharashtra, 2 from Kerala and one from Karnataka.

Earlier, the Delhi government had asked all the hospitals in the city to ensure the availability of beds, ventilators, oxygen, masks and other requirements, as new Covid cases spread across the country.
