Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Monday slammed the Congress for claiming the BJP will change the country's Constitution.
Addressing a rally for BJP candidate Charansingh Thakur in Katol, he said it was the Congress which had "distorted" the Constitution for self-interest and had also imposed Emergency in 1975.
Maharashtra assembly polls will be held on November 20, while results will be announced on November 23.
"We will not change Babasaheb Ambedkar's Constitution nor will we allow anyone to do so. The basic structure of the Constitution cannot be changed," he said.
The minister also cited the Supreme Court judgment in the landmark Kesavananda Bharti case to buttress his point.
"The Constitution's salient features like freedom of speech, democracy, socialism, secularism as well as fundamental rights cannot be changed by anyone. Indira Gandhi during Emergency, distorted the Constitution. In the history of the country, it was Congress which did the sin of distorting the Constitution and they now blame us," Gadkari asserted.

Eleven suspected militants were killed in a fierce gunfight with security forces on Monday after the insurgents in camouflage uniforms, armed with sophisticated weapons, fired indiscriminately at the Borobekra police station and a CRPF camp located alongside it in Jiribam district of Manipur, officials said.

BJP leader Anurag Thakur Monday dubbed the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party as "bad coins," saying the people of Punjab were fed up with their "corruption." Thakur made the remarks while canvassing for BJP candidate from Barnala assembly segment Kewal Singh Dhillon for the upcoming bypolls.
The bypolls to the four assembly seats -- Gidderbaha, Dera Baba Nanak, Chabbewal and Barnala -- will take place on November 20 and counting of votes will be held on November 23.

The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a plea filed by political strategist-turned-politician Prashant Kishor's Jan Suraaj Party to postpone the Bihar by-elections scheduled to be held on November 13.
A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan said it was too late to interfere in the scheduled by-polls.
Calling it a policy issue, the top court said courts shouldn't interfere in such matters and noted all arrangements had been made for the Bihar by-elections.
"Other political parties do not have a problem. Only you have a problem. You are a new political party, you need to know these zig-zags," remarked the bench.
