IndiGo, India's largest carrier, has implemented changes to its ancillary charges effective January 4, 2024, as part of its ongoing efforts to adapt to market dynamics. The notable update includes the removal of the fuel charge, a move aimed at easing the financial burden on passengers. However, this benevolence is accompanied by an increase in seat-selection charges, impacting various categories of seats.

The revision in seat-selection charges is marked by the introduction of a new pricing structure, with some seats now priced at ₹2000.

The changes have been reflected on the airline's booking engine since late last week, and the updated charges are now visible on its official website.

IndiGo designates certain seats as "XL," offering extra legroom or, in the case of first-row seats, convenience during deplaning. Despite the increased charges, there is no alteration in the service provided for these XL seats. Among the 180 or 186 seats in the A320/A320neo aircraft, a substantial portion is categorized as XL seats, with rates varying between ₹1400 and ₹2000.

33% increase at the upper end

While the prices for seat selection previously ranged from ₹150 to ₹1500, the recent adjustments now extend the range to ₹150 to ₹2000, marking a 33% increase at the upper end. It's important to note that free seats are still available for booking, typically situated in the middle towards the rear of the aircraft.

Changes not uniform across all seat categories

The changes are not uniform across all seat categories, with instances of price drops observed. Notably, there has been no alteration in seat selection charges for flights operated by the ATR 72-600, which constitutes over 40 aircraft in the airline's fleet.

For specific rows on the Airbus fleet, there have been nuanced adjustments. Seat selection charges for rows 2 and 3 have decreased from ₹450 to ₹400. However, on A320s, which form the majority of IndiGo's fleet, charges for rows 11 and 14 to 20 have increased from ₹250 to ₹400, encompassing aisle, window, and middle seats.

Despite these changes, IndiGo continues to offer a range of ancillary services, contributing to a reported ancillary revenue of ₹1551 crores in the last quarter. This revenue encompasses various offerings such as seat selection, meal selection, and other combinations available for sale.
