J&K's Article 370 to go, Smriti Irani heralds 'era of opportunities and prosperity' in Jammu and Kashmir

The Centre on Monday scrapped Article 370 of the Constitution that gives special status to Jammu and Kashmir. Home Minister Amit Shah made a statement in the Rajya Sabha on Jammu and Kashmir where he moved a proposal that Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir will be separate Union Territories. As per the motion, J&K is proposed to have a legislature, while Ladakh is not.

Shortly after Home Minister Amit Shah tabled a resolution to this effect in Rajya Sabha, President Ram Nath Kovind came out with a notification -- The Constitution (Application to Jammu and Kashmir) Order, 2019 that will come into force immediately.

Reacting on the same, Union Minister Smriti Irani took to her Twitter handle to congratulate Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah for this historic decision. She said: ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas’, as today marks the beginning of a new era" [sic] Sharing her happiness, Smriti also tweeted a poem in Kashmiri dialect on her social media handle. The proposals moved by the Home Minister has led to an uproar in the Rajya Sabha by the Opposition. 

Prologue to Amit Shah's Rajya Sabha announcement

Shah joined PM Narendra Modi during the meeting of Cabinet Committee on Security and later in the Cabinet meeting at the Prime Minister's residence at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg. Shah had also held a one-hour meeting with Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad before his meeting with the Prime Minister.
