Srinagar: The counting of votes for the 90 Assembly constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir is set to commence on Tuesday morning, marking a crucial step in establishing the region's first elected government since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. This election is particularly significant as it is the first assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir since 2014.

Voter Turnout and Candidate Overview

The elections were conducted in three phases, resulting in a voter turnout of 63.45%, slightly lower than the 65.52% recorded during the 2014 elections. The fates of 873 candidates vying for seats in the 90-member assembly have been sealed, with results expected to be announced by Tuesday evening.

Prominent candidates include:

- Omar Abdullah (National Conference), contesting from Budgam and Ganderbal

- Sajad Gani Lone (People's Conference), running in Handwara and Kupwara

- Tariq Hamid Karra ( Congress ) from Batamaloo

- Ravindra Raina ( BJP ), contesting from Nowshera

Other notable figures include Ghulam Ahmad Mir ( Congress ), Waheed Para and Iltija Mufti (PDP), Altaf Bukhari (Apni Party), and veteran CPI(M) leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami.

Exit Poll Predictions

Recent exit polls suggest that the alliance between the National Conference and its partners may emerge as the single largest political force in the assembly, further intensifying the anticipation surrounding the results.

The last assembly elections in 2014 were conducted in five phases between November 25 and December 20, resulting in the election of 87 members to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly. The results were announced on December 23, 2014. 

The previous elections in 2008 were held over seven days following the collapse of the PDP-INC coalition government. Omar Abdullah of the National Conference became the youngest Chief Minister at 38, leading a coalition with Congress after the elections.
