Karnataka students plant saplings in potholes as a form of protest

Members of a student organization ‘Vidyarthi Sanghatane’, on Friday, protested against the poor road conditions in Shivamogga. They protested by planting saplings in the potholes. The students alleged that Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, Lok Sabha Member of Parliament BY Raghavendra and senior minister KS Eshwarappa had done precious little to resolve the problems of potholes. All the three leaders hail from Shivamogga. The ‘Vidyarthi Sanghatane’ members demanded a quick resolution to this problem.

Students slam Karnataka government

The president of the student organization, Vinay Rajavath observed that people were struggling to move on the street every day. He also accused all parties of ruining the lives of young people and opined that the area lacked development. Furthermore, Rajavath stated that he had written a letter in his own blood, describing the problems of the region.  

Rajavath said, "Be it any party, all have ruined the youth's life as no constructive development has taken place in the area. I have written a letter in my blood stating the issues of Shivamogga including potholes.” 

Speaking to the press, another student remarked that the state government was not bothered about development. He claimed that Yediyurappa was not as brilliant in governing Karnataka. The students held placards and raised slogans against the Yediyurappa-led government. 

The student stated, "Yediyurappa-led government is not concerned about development and four-time Chief Minister is less brilliant in administration."

Unique protest

People in Karnataka have found unique ways to highlight the issue of potholes. In September, a video of a ‘moonwalk’ went viral on social media. The 45-second-long video starts by giving the viewer an illusion of a man walking on the moon. However, it was later revealed that an actor dressed in a spacesuit walked through the crater-like potholes in the Herohalli area of Bengaluru to create awareness about the issue.
