New Delhi: In a shocking incident, a cyber lawyer in the national capital was duped of Rs 93 lakh by fraudsters posing as bank officials. The scam was executed by the fraudsters on the online messaging platform WhatsApp.
A lawyer hailing from Thiruvananthapuram was offered an investment opportunity in the stock markets on WhatsApp call. After contacting them, he made an initial investment. The victim was then added to a WhatsApp group named "Club 88". Later, he was asked to download a mobile app called "Block Tigers."
The scam unfolded when Kumar received a call on his WhatsApp from an international number, offering an enticing investment opportunity that he believed to be genuine. Trusting the caller, he invested a substantial amount of money.
The scammer lured the lawyer with promises of substantial stock market profits. The victim was then added to a WhatsApp group named "Club 88" and directed to download a mobile app called “Block Tigers.”After downloading the app, he paid Rs 93 lakh to multiple bank accounts by June 27.
Later, after realising that his promised returns have failed to materialise, he tried to contact those who promised him of hefty returns but realised that they were not reachable on the phone.
Cyber Police have registered a complaint based on the complaint received by the lawyer.
