PM Modi Promises Reforms, Stable Policy Regime to Investors

While people in most countries that went to polls this year voted for a change, Indians preferred continuity, political stability and economic growth, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday, asserting that a new neo-middle class is driving the country's progress.

Addressing the ET World Leaders Forum, Modi said the country is writing a unique success story, and the impact of its reforms is visible in the economy's performance.

He said the world’s prosperity lies in India’s prosperity, adding that his government wanted more companies to become global brands and the country to become a leader in every sector.

West Bengal: Durgapur Airport Gets Two New Flights, Will Connect Bhubaneswar, Guwahati

The Durgapur airport in West Bengal got two new flights, connecting Bhubaneswar, Bagdogra in Siliguri and Guwahati, a statement said on Saturday.

IndiGo will operate the two flights on Bhubaneswar-Durgapur-Bagdogra and Bhubaneswar-Durgapur-Guwahati routes, it said.

The Bhubaneswar-Durgapur-Bagdogra flight commenced operations on Friday, and will operate four days a week -- Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.

The Bhubaneswar-Durgapur-Guwahati route began operations on Saturday. This flight will operate three days a week -- Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

NIA Arrests Key Accused Involved in Recruitment, Funds Collection for CPI (Maoist)

The NIA on Saturday arrested a key accused actively involved in recruitment and funds collection for the banned CPI (Maoist), it said in a statement.

The accused has been identified as Ajay Singhal alias Aman, a native of Haryana's Sonipat district who was residing in SAS Nagar, Punjab.

According to the National Investigation Agency's (NIA) investigation, Singhal was in charge of the state organising committee of the CPI (Maoist) in Haryana and actively involved in the revival of activities of the banned organisation in the Northern Regional Bureau states of Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Delhi and Himachal Pradesh.

IMA Again Demands Central Law on Violence Against Doctors, Hospitals

The IMA has written to the National Task Force (NTF), which has been mandated to formulate protocol for ensuring safety and security of healthcare professionals, again demanding a central law on violence against doctors and hospitals and declaring hospitals as safe zones.

Stating that the Supreme Court has constituted the NTF to evolve a national consensus and to formulate protocols with due consultation of all stakeholders, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) in its letter formulated its submission in three sections.

The NTF was constituted the apex court in the wake of protests by doctors and healthcare professionals following the recent rape and murder of a trainee woman doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

72 roads closed in Himachal, Met predicts heavy rain on Sept 2

A total of 72 roads have been closed in Himachal Pradesh following rain, officials said on Saturday even as the local Met office here warned of heavy showers at isolated places on September 2.

Of the 72 roads, 35 are closed in Shimla, 15 in Mandi, 10 in Kangra, nine in Kullu and one each in Una, Sirmaur, and Lahaul and Spiti districts, according to the state emergency operation centre.

Ten power and 32 water supply schemes have also been disrupted in the state due to rain, it said.

Depression in Bay of Bengal likely to cross between Vishakhapatnam & Gopalpur: IMD

The well-marked low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal on Saturday intensified into a depression and the system is likely to cross north Andhra Pradesh and adjoining south Odisha coasts between Vishakhapatnam and Gopalpur close to Kalingapatnam around midnight, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

The well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh and South Odisha coasts moved west-northwestwards and intensified into a depression, the IMD said in a bulletin.

"It is likely to move further west-northwestwards and cross north Andhra Pradesh and adjoining south Odisha coasts between Vishakhapatnam and Gopalpur close to Kalingapatnam around midnight of today, the 31st August 2024," the IMD said.

NIA conducts searches in Bihar, seizes ammunition

 As part of a crackdown on the banned outfit CPI (Maoist), the NIA conducted searches at seven locations in two districts of Bihar and seized incriminating digital devices, documents and ammunition, an official statement said on Saturday.

Searches were conducted on Friday at five locations in Kaimur district and two in Rohtas district in the case connected with the arrest of two key CPI (Maoist) leaders, Vijay Kumar Arya and Umesh Chaudhary, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) said.

The duo were picked up from Rohtas in April 2022. Levy receipts, pamphlets and digital devices were seized from Arya at that time, according to the statement.

UPI likely to grow further in several countries: RBI Governor

 Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das said he is optimistic that the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) will grow further in several countries.

Das, who is on a five-day visit to the state, said UPI is already present in many countries through QR codes and the linkage of fast payment systems, and discussions are underway with several other nations.

“We expect this to grow further at the global level and internationalise in future,” he told reporters here on Friday evening.

J&K government orders transfer of 7 police officers following ECI directive

The Jammu and Kashmir government on Friday night appointed four officers from the J&K Police Services (JKPS) as new Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) for Srinagar, Baramulla, and Kupwara districts, and as Superintendent of Police (SP) of Handwara, in accordance with approval from the Election Commission of India.

As per an order issued by the Principal Secretary Home, Chandrakar Bharti, seven police officials, including two IPS officers, have been transferred and given new assignments across three districts and one police district.

PM Modi to visit Brunei, Singapore in first week of September

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Brunei on September 3-4, seeking to further strengthen the bilateral cooperation in all existing sectors, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Friday.
This will be the first bilateral visit of an Indian prime minister to Brunei, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at his media briefing.
The visit will also mark 40 years of the establishment of diplomatic ties between India and Brunei, he said.
