Bhubaneswar: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla called for increased public involvement in the formulation of laws and public policies during his speech at the inauguration of the KIIT School of Public Policy on Sunday. Highlighting the significant impact that new laws can have on society, Birla urged citizens to share their views and suggestions whenever proposed legislation is made public.

"Though public participation is there in formulation of laws and policies, I feel it inadequate and there is a need to enhance it," Birla stated. He emphasised the importance of citizen-centric policies that involve all stakeholders, ensure equal rights, and remain accountable to the populace.

Addressing an audience of academicians, policymakers, judges, and students, Birla underscored the role of public policy in shaping the future of the nation. He reiterated the necessity for policies that treat all sections of society equitably.

"The people of India have strong faith in democracy. Those who made attempts to attack democracy have lost their public trust," he remarked. He added, "Democracy is there in our works, working system and we all unitedly fight against the challenges. During the Covid-19 pandemic, we showed our strength to the world."

Birla also pointed out that India, being the world's largest democracy, derives strength from its diversity. He stated, "A well-drafted public policy is the foundation of a strong nation," and noted that the global community is increasingly looking to India for its peace-promoting policies, based on the principle of "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" or "the world is one family."

During his brief visit to Odisha , Birla also attended a meeting organised by the Rama Foundation earlier in the day, reinforcing his commitment to fostering a participatory democratic process.
