New Delhi: A day after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee faced tough questions on the RG Kar rape case during her UK visit, the BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya dropped another bombshell. He shared a 5-second clip from an interview Mamata gave after her Oxford speech. In the clip, when asked about India becoming the world’s largest economy, she simply said, “I will differ that.” Malviya jumped on this, accusing her of having a problem with India’s growth and shaming her for undermining India on foreign soil.

In a post on X, he said, “West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has a problem with India becoming the world’s largest economy… This is truly shameful. She is a disgrace to the constitutional office she holds. Who behaves like this on foreign soil?”

But the clip’s short length has raised eyebrows. Many netizens are calling it an edited video, alleging Malviya chopped it to push his political agenda. They say the full context of Mamata’s statement is missing.

Another BJP Karyakarta, Priti Gandhi also posted the same video, attacking Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Mamata Banerjee of disrespecting India on foreign lands. She wrote, “Inspired by Rahul Gandhi, Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee is Denigrating our Motherland on Foreign shores — Watch her getting upset when she's told that Indian economy is growing by leaps & bounds, and we will be the World's largest Economy by 2060! Shameful behaviour!”

When Mamata Remembers ‘Colonial Rule’

But this is not the first time Mamata has said something against India, earlier on the same trip, Mamata stirred another controversy during a business event in London. While inviting British companies to invest in West Bengal, she shocked everyone by praising the British and their 200-year rule over India. She spoke about “emotional and historical relation” with the UK, pointing to Kolkata’s heritage buildings as reminders of colonial times.

“Good afternoon to all my brothers and sisters. I love UK because we have an emotional relation, historical relation… 190 years you ruled in India, and when you ruled before independence, Calcutta was the capital. You built so many heritage buildings and so many things. Every day we used to remember that” she said.
