Man Accused in Rape and Murder Case Allegedly Commits Suicide With Shoelace in Police Custody

A man arrested in Maharashtra's Chandrapur in connection with a rape and murder case reportedly committed suicide while in police custody on Sunday.

Chandrapur: A man arrested in Maharashtra's Chandrapur in connection with a rape and murder case reportedly committed suicide while in police custody on Sunday.

Samadhan Koli, who was in his 20s, was found hanging in the toilet of Warora police station around 8.30 am, an official said.

Koli had been detained for the alleged rape and murder of his girlfriend, Arti Chandravanshi, at Anandwan on June 26. He was remanded in police custody until July 4.

"Koli went to the toilet and used a shoelace to hang himself from the door. We have already initiated a departmental inquiry, and action will be taken against policemen who were negligent on duty. The case will be handed over to the CID after necessary formalities," the official said.

Chandravanshi, aged 24, was found dead with multiple stab wounds at her residence in Anandvan on June 26. Following an investigation, Koli was apprehended the next day.

Further investigations revealed that Koli had allegedly purchased knives online and attacked Chandravanshi while she was alone at home, the official said.

A 24-year-old woman was found hanging at her residence here on 27 June as her father alleged that she was killed for dowry by her husband and in-laws, police said on Thursday.

The incident took place in the Chitbadgaon area of this district, they said.

The body of the deceased, Priyanka Yadav (24), was taken into custody and sent for postmortem, the police said.

According to the police, Priyanka's father, Vijay Shankar Yadav, a resident of Govindpur village, has lodged a complaint against his daughter's husband Satyendra Yadav, father-in-law Janardan Yadav, mother-in-law Shivrati and one other Sarita Devi alleging that they were harassing her for dowry and killed her.

Additional Superintendent Police, Durga Prasad Tiwari, said investigations are on in the matter.
