A man was allegedly found cooking meat near the stairs of a temple in Barsana, was thrashed by some devotees and subsequent arrested, police said on Friday.

Mathura: A man allegedly found cooking meat near the stairs of a temple in Mathura's Barsana, was thrashed by some devotees and subsequent arrested, police said on Friday.

The incident took place at the Ladli Temple in Barsana town on Thursday evening. The man, identified as Sanjai from Rajasthan, has been living in Barsana for the last couple of years and used to beg in and around the temple area.

"He was booked under Section 295 (defiling place of worship) of the Indian Penal Code and sent to judicial custody," said Inspector Arvind Nirval.

According to the police, Sanjai was assaulted by some individuals on Thursday evening after found him cooking meat near the temple. They then handed him over to the police.
