Karimganj: A massive landslide caused by the incessant rains in Assam’s Karimganj district has resulted in the death of as many as five people including three minors. The incident occurred late Tuesday night, during which a few residences in the area were also damaged. On information, the concerned authorities rushed to the spot and initiated a rescue operation. According to the reports, personnel from the concerned department are at the spot and efforts are being made to clear the debris and mud from the area.
As per the information, the landslide incident, which took place in Badarpur area in Assam's Karimganj district, hit the area late at night, when the people were sleeping inside their house.
Superintendent of Police (Karimganj District), Partha Protim Das, said that the incident took place at Gainachora-Bendargool village under Badarpur police station. He said that the bodies were sent to the Silchar Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Official sources confirmed that the landslide occurred at around 12.45 am, at the Gainachora-Bendargool village. Following which, the officials from the State Disaster Response Force and community volunteers arrived at the site to carry out rescue operations.
The deceased have been identified as Roymun Nessa (55), Sahida Khanam (18), Jahida Khanam (16), Hamida Khanam (11) and 3-year-old Mehdi Hassan.
Further rescue operations are underway at the site.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that parts of West Bengal, Assam and Meghalaya will receive extremely heavy rainfall on Wednesday. It added that heavy to very heavy rainfall was very likely to continue over the region during the next three days.
Heavy rainfall has been recorded in parts of the North East over the past few days. In Sikkim, at least six persons were killed and five others went missing in landslides due to heavy rainfall at Mangan district last week.
