New Delhi: Mufti Shah Mir, a prominent Muslim scholar accused of helping Pakistan 's ISI for kidnapping Kulbhushan Jadhav from Iran, was shot dead by unknown gunmen in Turbat, Balochistan. According to initial reports, Mufti Shah Mir had stepped out of the mosque after offering prayers when armed assailants opened fire on him.

He sustained critical injuries and was rushed to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his wounds. It is said that Mufti Shah Mir had close contacts with Pakistan's Islamic fundamentalist political party JIU.

Mir, a closed aide of Pakistan’s ISI, was deeply involved in many illegal activities including drug and arms trafficking. Shah Mir used to frequently visit terror camps in Pakistan and was also involved in helping terrorists infiltrating into India. Mir was also active in Afghanistan in gathering intelligence for Pakistani military.

More specifically, Mufti Shah Mir’s job was to gather intelligence about insurgent groups in regions illegally occupied by Pakistan and how they were planning their independence.

Who is Kulbhushan Jadhav?

Kulbhushan Jadhav is a former Indian Navy officer who was born in Maharashtra ’s Sangli on April 16, 1970. His father Sudhir Jadhav is a retired Mumbai Police officer. Jadhav is married and has two children. His family is settled in Mumbai.

Jadhav was captured by ISI from Iran and smuggled to Pakistan where he was tortured to confess all sorts of things.

However, Pakistan alleged that Jadhav had entered Iran's Chabahar in 2003 using a fake passport and name Hussain Mubarak Patel. It levelled baseless allegations on Jadhav alleging that his job was to destabilise Balochistan and Karachi by strengthening the separatist movements after which he was arrested on March 3, 2016 from Balochistan.

However, India rejected these allegations by Pakistan and said that Jadhav was kidnapped from Iran where he was running a business.

India busted out Pakistan’s lies and said that Kulbhushan Jadhav was doing his business in Iran’s port city Chahahar after his ‘premature retirement’ from the Navy.

When India approached International Court of Justice to secure Jadhav's release

After Pakistan falsely framed Jadhav in an espionage case at the behest of India’s intelligence agencies and awarded him a death penalty, India raised up the matter strongly and appealed in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) which ordered Pakistani courts to stay Jadhav's execution.

Pakistan stayed the execution after ICJ's ruling on July 17, 2019. The international court also asked Pakistan to review the entire process of his trial and provide India with consular access.
