Mumbai: Mihir Shah, the prime accused in the Worli BMW hit-and-run case and the son of a Shiv Sena leader, has confessed to driving the luxury car at the time of the accident that left a woman dead and her husband injured, said police.

Mihir Shah (24) was arrested on Tuesday from Thane district, after remaining elusive for two days after the accident. Subsequently, the Mumbai Police produced Shah before a metropolitan magistrate court in Dadar which sent him to police custody till July 16.

Shah had allegedly rammed his BMW into a two-wheeler, killing Kaveri Nakhwa (45), who was riding pillion, and injuring her husband Pradeep Nakhwa in the early hours of Sunday.

After the crash incident came to light. His father and Shiv Sena leader from Palghar district, Rajesh Shah, was also arrested along with a man, Rajendra Singh, who was allegedly present in the car at the time of the accident on on July 7 morning. Rajesh Shah is also an accused in the case and he was later granted bail. The car that Mihir was driving was registered in the name of his father.

What police said about main accused in Mumbai hit-and-run: 5 points

  • Police said Mihir Shah has claimed that he possesses a driving licence, but the cops were yet to recover the document, news agency PTI reported. 
  • After hitting the two-wheeler, Mihir Shah knew that a woman was stuck in one of the tyres of his car, but chose to drive recklessly and did not bothered about stopping the car even though other motorists signalled and shouted, to make him stop, a police official said.
  • During interrogation, Mihir Shah admitted he was behind the wheels at the time of the crash but didn't reveal the time when he started driving and the stretch he drove on. According to media reports, Mihir claimed he abandoned the car at Kala Nagar and fled the crime scene fearing public fury. Likewise, his family members also claimed that left their homes fearing public assault.
  • In a court in Dadar, the Mumbai Police probing the case sought the 24-year-old's custody on grounds that he allegedly tried to mislead the police by concealing his identity by trimming his hair and shaving his beard. The police also claimed to have recovered the number plate of the BMW which they suspect both Mihir and Rajrishi Bidawat have destroyed.
  • Cops claimed that the main accused evaded questions that can prove crucial in the probe i.e, such as about being drunk at the time of the crash. Media sources also reported that he spoke with his girlfriend 40 times before leaving the car. His girlfriend ma also be detained for questioning, the report claimed.
