Mumbai: A huge crocodile spotted roaming a lakeside road on the IIT Bombay campus in Powai created panic among residents and students. The incident, which took place on Sunday night, was caught on video and quickly went viral, sparking concerns about human-wildlife conflict in the area.

The crocodile reportedly emerged from Powai Lake and was seen resting on the adjacent road. According to wildlife rescuer Pawan Sharma, such sightings are rare as crocodiles generally remain within the lake waters and avoid human-populated areas.

“The crocodile might be a female searching for a nesting site to lay eggs,” said Pawan Sharma, who is the Founder President of RAWW (Resqink Association for Wildlife Welfare) and an honorary wildlife warden.

Officials Ensure Crocodile’s Safety

Local residents and forest officials closely monitored the situation to ensure the safety of both the animals and the public.

“It crawled back into the lake on its own,” Sharma confirmed, adding that no harm came to the reptile or anyone nearby.

Authorities Ask Public Not to Panic

The Mumbai Range of Thane Territorial Wing has taken cognizance of the incident and is monitoring the situation. Authorities have urged people not to panic but to remain alert and avoid areas prone to crocodile sightings.

This is not the first time a crocodile has been spotted near Powai Lake, but such incidents are rare. Experts believe the rising encroachment on natural habitats and changes in the lake ecosystem may be forcing reptiles to venture onto land.

What to Do If You Spot a Crocodile?

Wildlife experts have advised people to stay away from the reptile, avoid making loud noises, and immediately inform forest officials if they spot a crocodile in an unexpected area.

With more such sightings being reported, authorities are expected to take further steps to protect both wildlife and human settlements in the Powai region.
