Mumbai: The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) on Friday announced a 19 per cent increase in toll rates on the Samruddhi Expressway. The new rates will come into effect from April 1, 2025, impacting all vehicle owners using the high-speed corridor between Mumbai and Nagpur.
The Samruddhi Expressway, spanning 701 km, is being developed to facilitate faster travel between the two cities. Currently, 625 km of the expressway—from Nagpur to Igatpuri—is operational. The remaining 76 km stretch from Igatpuri to Amane is expected to open soon. Once fully functional, the expressway will cut travel time between Nagpur and Thane from 16 hours to just eight.
Under the revised toll structure, vehicle owners will have to pay increased charges per kilometre.
For commuters travelling between Nagpur and Igatpuri, the toll rates have been revised as follows:
An MSRDC official stated, “The toll revision has been implemented as per the standard policy for expressways. The maintenance and expansion of the expressway require additional funds, and the toll adjustment has been planned accordingly.”
Commuters and transporters expressed concerns over the hike. A truck operator from Nagpur said, “Freight costs will increase, which will eventually affect the prices of goods. The government should reconsider the steep hike.”
Meanwhile, regular commuters on the expressway also voiced their opinions. A private car owner from Thane stated, “The expressway saves time, but these increased charges are a burden on daily travellers. The government should consider a discount for frequent users.”
Despite the increase, the MSRDC emphasized that the expressway provides a faster and more efficient travel experience, significantly reducing fuel consumption and vehicle wear and tear. The full 701 km stretch is expected to be operational soon, bringing further convenience to travellers.
The 701-km-long Samruddhi Expressway has been designed to reduce travel time between Mumbai and Nagpur to just eight hours, compared to the previous 16-hour journey. Currently, 625 km of the expressway is operational from Nagpur to Igatpuri, with the final 76 km stretch from Igatpuri to Amane expected to open soon.
Once fully operational, the expressway will boost connectivity, reduce congestion on alternate routes, and enhance trade and logistics. However, the latest toll hike has raised concerns among regular travelers, particularly commercial vehicle operators.
