New Delhi: The recent revelation of Jagan Mohan Reddy's secretive hilltop palace in Vishakhapatnam has ignited a storm of controversy, shedding light on the opulent lifestyles of political leaders across India. Constructed behind massive barricades and unveiled to the public amidst scrutiny, Reddy's palace has drawn comparisons to other instances where political figures' lavish expenditures have sparked public outrage.
Arvind Kejriwal, Chief Minister of Delhi, faced severe criticism from the BJP after allegations surfaced that over ₹45 crore had been spent on renovations to his official residence.
Accused of betraying his promise of "simple living" upon entering politics, the BJP highlighted extravagant details such as imported marble from Vietnam and pre-fabricated wooden walls and curtains costing lakhs of rupees each. The revelation, including a single curtain priced at nearly ₹8 lakh, fueled controversy over the use of public funds for luxurious enhancements.
Similarly, Mayawati, former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, faced backlash for overseeing the construction of numerous statues in Lucknow and Noida depicting herself, her mentor Kanshi Ram, and elephants - the symbol of her party, BSP.
These statues, crafted from bronze, cement, and marble, were funded by taxpayers' money during her tenure from 2007 to 2012. Critics accused her of self-obsession and megalomania, pointing out the exorbitant costs associated with the installations.
After former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav vacated his official residence as per the Supreme Court's directive, significant damages were discovered at the government bungalow. According to a report submitted to the Rajya Sampati Vibhag (State Property Department), the Public Works Department (PWD) estimated that damages totalling Rs 10 lakh had occurred to the premises. The report was filed following Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik's directive to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to take action against Akhilesh Yadav.
The damages reported included broken tiles, missing water taps, decorative plants, lights, bathroom fittings, electrical fixtures, a damaged swimming pool, cycle track, and kitchen facilities allegedly left in poor condition by the former Chief Minister.
