As Mumbai commemorates the 15th anniversary of the harrowing 26/11 terror attacks, the scars of that fateful day still linger in the collective memory of the city. Orchestrated by the Islamist terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), the coordinated onslaught by 10 Pakistani terrorists unfolded through 12 shooting and bombing incidents, leaving India's financial capital in shock.

The 26/11 attacks, spanning three days, claimed the lives of 165 civilians and left over 300 people injured. The security forces displayed valor by neutralizing nine terrorists, and one, Ajmal Kasab, was captured alive. The nation mourned the loss, grappling with the trauma of the unprecedented assault.

However, amidst the grief, a controversial incident involving Congress leader Rahul Gandhi surfaced, amplifying public scrutiny. At the time, a report by Mail Today highlighted a stark contrast between the somber atmosphere gripping the nation and Rahul Gandhi's seemingly carefree demeanor. The Congress scion, tagged as the party's heir apparent, was reported to be in a celebratory mood.

"Even before the tears of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan’s mother could dry up, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi went partying with his pals at a farmhouse on Delhi’s outskirts," the report stated, raising questions about the sensitivity and awareness of the political leadership during a national crisis.

BJP expresses discontent and alleges of insinuating a divisive political narrative.

Union Minister Rajeev Chandrashekhar and BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla both took to social media to express their discontent, emphasizing the need to remember the victims and scrutinize the actions of political figures during those critical hours.

Chandrashekhar's post highlighted the alleged partying of Rahul Gandhi and questioned the Congress party's response to the attacks.

“15 years ago during Cong / UPA/ INDI alliance govt -10 Pakistan based terrorists entered Mumbai unopposed and killed 175 and wounded several 100s. Remember these images of Terrorists. Remember all those who were murdered by Terrorists. Remember @RahulGandhi who was partying while our people died. Remember Rahul mentor Digvijay Singh who said, this was not terrorism but RSS conspiracy. Remember how Cong appeasement policies referred to terrorists as Osamaji. Remember those who laid down their lives protecting Mumbai - Never Forget #SandeepUnnikrishnan, #TukaramOmble & others. Remember those who even today, appease Terrorists like #Hamas like INDI alliance stalwart @pinarayivijayan,” wrote the BJP leader.

Poonawalla pointedly referred to those who, in his view, attempted to give Pakistan a clean chit for the 26/11 attacks, insinuating a divisive political narrative.

“Even as we will never forgive or forget the terrorists of Pakistan… The enemy outside.. we must not forget the TROJAN HORSES inside. Those who tried to give Pakistan a clean chit for 26/11.. they have always stood with the Pakistani narrative just because they hate one man… they even tried to save Kasab ! Never forget … never ever.. who partied when 26/11 took place.. never forget who in 2004-09 stopped commemoration of Kargil Vijay Diwas.. never forget who asked for proof from Armed forces. No longer do we give Pakistan MFN status - back then after 26/11 despite information & request of Air Chief Marshal - UPA govt did not take action against Pakistan & gave them MFN status.. today if Pak dares to commit Uri or Pulwama they get Surgical Strike & Balakote air strike in return.. they get Muh Tod Jawab (MTJ) status. But don’t forget the Trojan Horses within,” he wrote on X.

As Mumbai pays homage to the lives lost and the resilience displayed during those dark days, the incident involving the Congress leader remains a point of contention, prompting reflection on the role of political leaders in times of national tragedy.
