New Delhi: India's first vertical lift railway sea bridge is set to be inaugurated in Pamban, Rameswaram, marking a milestone in the country’s railway infrastructure. The newly constructed bridge replaces the historic British-era Pamban Railway Bridge, which was commissioned in 1914 and featured a manually operated horizontal opening mechanism to allow ships to pass. Situated in Tamil Nadu’s Ramanathapuram district, the bridge serves as a crucial link between the Indian mainland and Rameswaram Island, one of the Char Dham pilgrimage sites.

The original bridge, initially built for Metre Gauge trains, was later strengthened for Broad Gauge operations and reopened in 2007. However, due to age and structural limitations, the Ministry of Railways approved the construction of a new, technologically advanced bridge in February 2019.

Why It’s a Gamechanger?

A century after the original, the New Pamban Bridge stands as a monument to engineering brilliance, revolutionizing railway infrastructure with cutting-edge technology.

Old Pamban Bridge (1914)

Manually operated mechanism for ship clearance.

Air clearance: 19m above sea level.

Single-track design, accommodating only slower trains.

Faced structural challenges due to age and corrosion.

New Pamban Bridge (2025)

  • Fully automated vertical lift span for seamless marine traffic movement.
  • Increased air clearance of 22m, ensuring safer navigation for ships.
  • Designed for double tracks and electrification, supporting high-speed trains.
  • Enhanced durability, sleek modern design, and improved efficiency.

Engineering Brilliance and Specifications

  • Built at a cost of Rs 535 crore by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), the 2.05 km-long bridge features cutting-edge engineering advancements:
  • 100 spans, each measuring 18.3 meters for enhanced structural stability.
  • A 73m navigational span designed to facilitate seamless marine traffic.
  • Optimized for faster trains, increased railway traffic, and long-term resilience.
  • The New Pamban Bridge is more than just a railway link—it is a symbol of modern India, where technological innovation meets infrastructural excellence.

As the nation anticipates its inaugural journey, this engineering marvel stands as a powerful reminder of how vision and innovation can bridge gaps—both literal and metaphorical.

How Much Will It Cost and How Will It Boost Connectivity?

Constructed at a cost of Rs 531 crore, the 2.1 km-long bridge was built by Southern Railway in collaboration with Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd. It features a 72.5-meter-long central section that will be lifted to a height of 17 meters, ensuring smooth passage for maritime traffic. The bridge is integrated with electro-mechanical lift mechanisms and synchronized with train control systems for automated and efficient operations.

Currently equipped with a single electrified railway track, the bridge has provisions for an additional line in the future to support growing rail traffic. At present, 10 regular and 10 weekly special trains operate up to Mandapam station. Following the inauguration, these services will be extended to Rameswaram, significantly improving connectivity with other parts of India.

This engineering marvel is expected to boost religious tourism, facilitate smoother transportation for residents, and provide economic benefits to businesses in the region. The New Pamban Bridge is not just a structural feat—it is a game-changer in India’s railway history, blending heritage with cutting-edge technology.
