PM Modi’s Special Gift: Varanasi’s GI-Tagged Pot with Sacred Sangam Water for Mauritian President

During his two-day visit to Mauritius, PM Modi gifted an exquisite metal pot with sacred Sangam water from Prayagraj to President Dharambeer Gokhiil.

New Delhi: In his two-day visit to Mauritius, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted an exquisite metal pot containing sacred Sangam water from Prayagraj to the Mauritian President, Dharambeer Gokhiil. The metal pot was a Geographical Indication (GI-tagged) item that originates from his parliamentary constituency, Varanasi.

Padma Shri Rajani Kant, Varanasi-based GI expert said, "This Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged pot of Banaras Metal Casting Craft is an exclusive craft with a spiral lid. Varanasi is renowned for its utilitarian utensils, puja vessels, and decorative art pieces, crafted from brass, copper, and brass-copper alloys."

PM Modi Gifts Ganga-Jamuni Lota to Gokhiil

"Utensils used for religious purposes are almost always made of copper due to its perceived purity. It is also known as the Ganga-Jamuni lota to carry the holy water,” he added.

Kant highlighted that the centuries-old tradition of crafting this pot by the Kasera community in Kashi continues to be practiced in areas such as Kashipura, Baluagali, and Vindhyachal Gali.

Kant, also known as the GI Man of India, explained that the vessel is made of brass with a central band of soldered copper. He is credited with facilitating the GI certification of 155 products from 21 states and union territories across the country.

Significance of Brass & Copper in Sanatan 

The brass and copper pot selected to hold the sacred water holds great significance in Sanatan culture. According to tradition, storing Ganga water in copper or brass vessels is considered auspicious, as these materials are believed to preserve the water's purity and spiritual essence.

Banaras Metal Casting Craft, a traditional skill from Varanasi, involves creating intricate, decorative reliefs and patterns on metal surfaces. This is achieved using techniques such as repoussé and sand casting, showcasing the region's rich craftsmanship.

In addition, PM Modi gifted a box made from Surat Sadeli craft, a Banaras sari, and Mithila makhana from Bihar , all of which are GI-tagged.
