New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed a PIL seeking a probe into allegations of a honeytrap scandal in Karnataka, calling it "political nonsense" and refusing to entertain the plea.

The top court questioned the relevance of the PIL, especially given that the petitioner was from Jharkhand . "You are a resident of Jharkhand. Why are you bothering about what’s happening in that state? They are competent enough to take care of this," the SC said, asserting that the matter did not require the apex court’s intervention.

The counsel for the petitioner argued that the allegations surrounding the honeytrap case were serious and warranted a judicial inquiry. “We are concerned about the independence of the judiciary,” the counsel contended.

However, the Supreme Court was not convinced. "Why should they fall into the honeytrap? If someone sets up a honeytrap and you fall into it, you are inviting trouble for yourself," the bench observed, adding that the court had more pressing matters to handle than political disputes.

All About Karnataka's ‘Honeytrap’ Case That Sparked Political Turmoil

The controversy first erupted in the Karnataka Assembly when Cooperation Minister KN Rajanna alleged that an attempt was made to honeytrap him and that at least 48 political leaders across parties had fallen victim to similar schemes.

Rajanna, while speaking to reporters, called for strict action against those involved in orchestrating such incidents.

Narrating his experience, Rajanna revealed that during both alleged honeytrap attempts, the same man accompanied different women each time.

“The woman who came the second time claimed to be a High Court lawyer. However, she was not in a lawyer’s coat but dressed in jeans and a blue top. They approached me, stating that they had something important and confidential to discuss. I can recognize them if I see their photos,” he stated.

However, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and state Congress chief DK Shivakumar has distanced himself from the controversy, despite having spoken to Rajanna about it.

While he confirmed advising Rajanna to file a complaint, he refrained from divulging details.

“I can’t explain what he told me,” Shivakumar said, adding that he would not comment on the matter. “Don’t ask me about it. I will not respond to anything related to that issue", the Deputy CM said.
