Rahul Gandhi's planned Amethi visit
Meanwhile, reports of the Gandhi scion's impending Amethi visit on July 10 had emerged on Monday. This development came days after Rahul Gandhi had officially submitted his resignation as the president of the party.
As per sources, this time Rahul will meet Congress leaders on the ground in the former Gandhi bastion. His visit will be a village tour as he is trying to understand what change is needed at the constituency. Amethi, from which Gandhi had been elected three times, was won by BJP leader and Union Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani by over 5,00,000 votes in the Lok Sabha elections.
Next Congress president saga
While Gandhi is busy doing on-ground work, his party struggles with the dilemma over the appointment of a new party chief following the dramatic resignation of Rahul Gandhi from the post, taking responsibility for the dismal performance of the Congress which managed to get only 52 seats in the Lok Sabha elections 2019. Congress leader and Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh on Saturday, called for a leader from the young clan to take over as the party president.
Following this call by Singh, General Secretary Jyotiraditya Scindia took to Twitter and announced his resignation from the post taking responsibility for the Lok Sabha loss. Similarly, Congress Mumbai chief Milind Deora also issued his resignation saying that he was looking forward to playing a national role in Delhi, stirring speculations over his entry in the race for the top post of the president of the Congress party. 48-year-old Jyotiraditya Scindia and 41-year-old Sachin Pilot are the front runners for the post, as per sources.
