A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Council of Ministers took oath in the second consecutive term of the NDA government, the allocation of portfolios has been released.
The former Home Minister Rajnath Singh has been allocated the Defence Minister
On Thursday the BJP MP from Uttar Pradesh's Lucknow Parliamentary constituency took oath as the Union Minister in the PM Modi Cabinet 2.0. at the swearing-in ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on May 30.
Union Home Minister and BJP candidate Rajnath Singh won the Lucknow seat with a margin of 3,47,302 votes, he was in the fray with SP's Poonam Sinha, Shatrughan Sinha's wife.
In 2014, Rajnath Singh won the election by a resounding 5,61,106 votes, defeating Rita Bahuguna Joshi by a margin of 2,72,749 votes. In third place, Nakul Dubey won a total of 64,449 votes. Atal Bihari Vajpayee had been contesting from Lucknow since 1991 till 2004. In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, BJP’s Lalji Tandon won the elections with 2,04,028 votes continuing the BJP winning streak.
In 1999-2000, Singh was the Union Cabinet Minister for Surface transport and Agriculture Minister in 2003-04 in the former Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. He also served as the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh in 2000-2002 and the BJP president from 2005-09 and 2013-14.
A former professor of physics, Singh played a crucial role in putting forth Narendra Modi's name as a Prime Ministerial candidate.
