New Delhi: The Pragati Maidan tunnel, which was closed due to waterlogging since June 28, was opened on Monday, July 1. This comes as a major relief to commuters who have been facing difficulties since last week's heavy rain that lashed the national capital.  Monsoon fury caused havoc on Friday as the city received its highest single-day rainfall for June in 88 years, flooding streets with water and leaving commuters stranded on roads.

The Pragati Maidan tunnel was opened for vehicular movement after cleaning and pumping out the water. Public works department officials said traffic movement in the tunnel resumed on Monday after it was cleaned, as reported by PTI. The tunnel had been closed since June 28 due to waist-height waterlogging.

Several Bridges, Underpasses Waterlogged in Delhi

The draining of water from the tunnel began on Friday itself and the tunnel was likely to be reopened by late Saturday night. Similar scenes were witnessed in Delhi's Minto Bridge where water was drained after hours of effort by authorities. The Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) said they received more than 200 calls from waterlogged areas on Friday.

PWD officials said it took 4-5 hours to drain out water from areas like Moolchand underpass, Zakhira, Dhaula Kuan and Adchini, while waterlogging complaints were resolved in Seelampur, Krishna Nagar and Badli after 2-3 hours.
