New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu arrived at the Parliament to address the joint sitting of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha on Thursday as the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha began on Monday and the 264th session of the Rajya Sabha will begin today, June 27.
President Murmu is likely to unveil the priorities of the newly-elected government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The President left for the Parliament in a procession from the Rashtrapati Bhavan, escorted by the horse-mounted presidential bodyguards.
On her arrival at the Parliament, she was received by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the presiding officers of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha at the Gaja Dwar of the new Parliament building.
She was escorted to the Lower House chamber with the traditional sceptre 'Sengol' in the lead.
Ahead of her address to the joint sitting of the Parliament, the Aam Aadmi Party said it would boycott the President's address against the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the liquor policy case.
"Today we will protest in the Rajya Sabha against the arrest of Arvind Kejriwal, and we will boycott the President's address. The President and the Constitution are supreme and when dictatorship is done in the name of justice, it is important to raise our voices. We did not have a discussion with the remaining parties of the INDI Alliance regarding this, but our party will boycott the President's address," AAP MP Sandeep Pathak said.
