Sandeshkhali News: In a stark contrast, Mamata Banerjee government's ministers on Saturday visited those areas in Sandeshkhali where Section 144 has been imposed after a Left delegation was stopped from going there by local police. Earlier in the day, the police cited prohibitory orders under Section 144 for detaining the Left delegation. Delivering a speech on the Sandeshkhali protests at JNU, West Bengal State Assembly Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari and BJP West Bengal President Sukanta Majumdar highlighted several atrocities inflicted on women and farmers by TMC leader Shahjahan's men and invited all the students to Sandeshkhali. The discussion, titled 'Shattering silence: Unveiling the reality of political violence against women in West Bengal', was organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

“Sheikh Shahjahan ran away on January 6. His whereabouts are still unknown. Bengal police knows where he is but they still haven't nabbed him. The women of Sandeshkhali finally started speaking up. It boils my blood to hear what the women shared. Women say Sheikh Shahjahan's men would come to check out women and choose them for parties at night and then they were raped systemically. This is unacceptable, this cannot happen! Women started taking names of Shibu Hazra, Uttam Hazra,” Bengal BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar said at JNU.

If TMC govt is transparent, why aren't women MPs allowed to meet Sandeshkhali victims: BJP leader

Senior BJP leader Vanathi Srinivasan on Saturday wondered if the TMC government in West Bengal is transparent, why women MPs of the saffron party were prevented from visiting Sandeshkhali and meeting alleged victims of atrocities there. The BJP Mahila Morcha national president criticised the state government over allegations of sexual abuse against women in Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district and alleged that women are not safe at all under TMC rule in Bengal.

"Women are not at all safe in West Bengal. If the TMC government is so transparent, why are opposition women MPs prevented from meeting the victims in Sandeshkhali? What are they trying to hide?" she asked while speaking to reporters here.

The West Bengal government led by Mamata Banerjee initiated an outreach programme in Sandeshkhali a week ago for complaints. In six days, more than 700 complaints have reportedly been received about the atrocities of TMC.

“We have received over 700 complaints in the last six days. Over 150 were land-related and 70 were money- and extortion-related. We have started the process of identifying and returning land to genuine owners,” Arun Kumar Samanta, Block Development Officer, Sandeshkhali-II Block, told a leading daily.

With the imposition of Section 144 in Sandeshkhali, the West Bengal police has created a complaint centre in the Bermojur area. The police officers are taking complaints from locals, who are complaining against Sheikh Shahjahan's brother Sirajuddin's oppression.

What happened in Sandeshkhali on February 23?

Sandeshkhali in West Bengal saw fresh protests on Friday in the ongoing agitation against accusations of sexual harassment against Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Shahjahan Sheikh and other members of the party.

Agitators opposed the random arrests of BJP woman leader Locket Chatterjee and protesting higher secondary students on Friday. Locals also reportedly damaged the property of accused TMC leaders and attacked the house of Ajit Maity and hit him with slippers.

Republic reporter Santu Pan had also been arrested by the West Bengal police in Sandeshkhali. The reporter was released on bail on Friday, in what is seen as a victory for the media and freedom of speech. 

Shahjahan Sheikh is also wanted in a money-laundering case by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and remains absconding. His anticipatory bail has been rejected by the PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act) Court.
