Video: Sealdah-bound Kanchanjungha Express Collides with Goods Train Near New Jalpaiguri
The Sealdah-bound Kanchanjungha Express collided with a goods train near New Jalpaiguri, prompting urgent rescue operations and official responses.
Kolkata: The Sealdah-bound Kanchanjungha Express, originating from Agartala, collided with a goods train near New Jalpaiguri on Monday morning, according to a senior North Frontier Railway (NFR) official. The incident occurred around 9 am near Rangapani, close to New Jalpaiguri station. According to reports 8 people are dead and over 20 are seriously injured in this incident.
There are unconfirmed reports of injuries among the passengers, as stated by the divisional railway manager of NFR’s Katihar Division. Rescue operations are currently underway to assess the situation and provide assistance to those affected.

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee Expresses Shock
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her shock and concern over the accident. In a social media post, she announced that the district magistrate, police superintendent, doctors, ambulances, and disaster response teams have been dispatched to the accident site for rescue, recovery, and medical assistance.
"Shocked to learn, just now, about a tragic train accident in the Phansidewa area of Darjeeling district. While details are awaited, the Kanchanjungha Express has reportedly been hit by a goods train. DM, SP, doctors, ambulances, and disaster teams have been rushed to the site for rescue, recovery, and medical assistance. Action on a war footing has been initiated," Banerjee said.
Statement of Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw
Ashwini Vaishnaw reacted on the accident and said that the rescue operations are active on war level and the teams of Railways, NDRF and SDRF are working in close coordination.
Further updates on the condition of passengers and the cause of the collision are awaited as authorities continue their efforts at the scene.
