New Delhi: Trinamool Congress leader Saugata Roy took a lighthearted jibe at Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, calling him "Shah Strict." He quipped that Shah was so rigid that he made stiff laws like the Immigration & Foreigners Bill, 2025, and could even “shoot down someone if necessary.” Roy made these remarks while opposing the bill and urged that it be sent to a joint parliamentary committee for further review.
Despite the opposition, the bill was passed in the Lok Sabha following Shah’s address.
During his speech, Shah accused the Mamata Banerjee-led Bengal government of facilitating illegal immigration by issuing legal identity documents to infiltrators. "All the Bangladeshis who have been caught have Aadhaar cards from 24-Parganas. You issue Aadhaar and voter cards, and they use them to come to Delhi," he said, pointing at Saugata Roy. He insisted that stopping infiltration was impossible without Bengal’s cooperation.
Shah defended the bill as necessary for national security, stating, "Immigration is not an isolated issue. For India's security, we must track who enters, for how long, and why."
Saugata Roy dismissed Shah’s claims as “baseless,” saying, "All the allegations of Union Home Minister Amit Shah are false." He also criticized the central government for delays in installing border fencing, adding, “They can’t blame us for that. BJP will not come to power in Bengal in 100 years.”
