Tamil Nadu, Chennai, Rains LIVE: As heavy rains lashed Tamil Nadu capital Chennai on Sunday evening, traffic movement was affected. Commuters faced severe road jams. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has predicted rains over various districts in Tamil Nadu for the next seven days. 

Non-stop Rains Paralyze Tamil Nadu and Puducherry

Unrelenting rainfall has wreaked havoc across multiple districts, plunging Tamil Nadu and Puducherry into a state of chaos. The deluge has led to widespread waterlogging, crippling normal life and prompting authorities to take drastic measures. Schools and colleges are shut in various districts, notably Villupuram, Cuddalore, Ranipet, Vellore, Thiruvannamalai, Kallakuruchi, and Chengalpet, as incessant rains show no signs of abating.

Meteorological forecasts paint a bleak picture for the region, predicting the continuation of heavy rainfall for the next few days. The affected areas are bracing themselves for further inundation and subsequent disruptions.

The unyielding downpour has been attributed to the formation of a trough in the easterlies stretching from South Sri Lanka to the west-central Bay of Bengal. Additionally, a cyclonic circulation, positioned about 1.5 kilometers above mean sea level, looms over the southeast Arabian Sea.

Rainfall activity continue over many places in Tamil Nadu

 

Rainfall in Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Karaikal

The RMC noted that rainfall activity continues to hit Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Karaikal, adjoining areas of Nagapattinam and  Tiruvarur districts. Rainfall over Ariyalur and Kallakurichi districts are also predicted.

Rains continue to lash north coastal districts and Puducherry

Rainfall activity continues over many places in the  north coastal districts and Puducherry. Intense spells at isolated places over Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur and Chengalpattu districts.

The RMC also predicted heavy rains at isolated places over ten districts of the state for Sunday. "Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, Ranipet, Vellore, Tiruvallur, Chennai, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, and Tirunelveli districts and Puducherry," it said.

Earlier on Saturday, heavy rainfall in the Western Ghats caused a flash flood at the Old Courtallam Falls at the foothills of the mountain range in Tamil Nadu's Tenkasi.
