Union Minister Smriti Irani rebukes Amethi District Magistrate for his misbehaviour

Smriti Irani, Union Minister and Member of Parliament from Amethi rebuked Prashant Sharma, the district magistrate (DM) of Amethi for his alleged misbehaviour with the brother of a slain BJP worker. Earlier, there was a lot of uproar on social media after the DM’s video surfaced online. Tagging the DM on the microblogging website Twitter, Irani said we should always try to be humble and caring. In a clear message to the officer, she asserted that they were appointed to serve the people and not to rule.

DM's misbehaviour

Sonu Singh, who owned a brick kiln was allegedly shot dead over an extortion demand of Rs 2 lakh. His father Shivnayak Singh is a local leader of the BJP. This incident happened just 500m away from the office of the Superintendent of Police in Amethi. When the DM went to meet Singh’s family, he purportedly said there was no place in the world where murders did not take place. Moreover, he remarked that the administration was not God to prevent such incidents. He also dragged Sunil, the brother of Sonu by holding his shirt when it was pointed out that Sonu could have been saved by the Dial 100 police team. When the assembled crowd objected to his behaviour, the DM reprimanded them mentioning that he was the senior-most officer of the district.

Involvement in another controversy

The victim’s family has named Chandra Shekhar Kesarwani, Shubham Tiwari and three other persons in a complaint filed at the Gauriganj police station. Following this, a First Information Report was lodged. As per reports, all the accused have criminal records. Incidentally, the Amethi DM was involved in another controversy recently when he arrived late for a court hearing. Thereafter, the judge punished him by keeping him in custody till evening.
