In a big win for India, owing to its diplomatic efforts, the United Nations Security Council has designated Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist under the United Nations sanctions list on Wednesday. Following the development, United States' Secretary of States Mike Pompeo has hailed it as a victory for the international community against terrorism. He said that development is a major step towards peace in South Asia.

Taking to Twitter, US Secretary of State also congratulated the efforts of the United States UN Mission for negotiating Azhar's designation as a terrorist.

Earlier, France issued an official statement calling hailing the development:

"France has welcomed the designation today, by the UNSC 1267 Sanctions Committee, of Mr Masood Azhar on the UN’s ISIL (Da’esh) and Al-Qaida Sanctions List.

For many years now, French diplomacy has been relentlessly pleading for sanctioning Mr Azhar, head of the terrorist group responsible, notably, for the Pulwama attack last February. In the application of its Monetary and Financial Code, France had adopted national sanctions against Masood Azhar on 15th March.

This decision taken at the United Nations Security Council signals the successful realisation of our efforts."

While all the permanent members of the United Nations had supported India's move to designate Azhar as a global terrorist, China had put a 'technical hold'. On Wednesday the official press release issued by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said:

"On this listing issue, China has been communicating with relevant parties in a constructive and responsible fashion. Recently, relevant countries revised and re-submitted the materials for the listing proposal to the 1267 Committee. After careful study of the revised materials and taking into consideration the opinions of relevant parties concerned, China does not have an objection to the listing proposal."
