Chiplun and other areas in Ratnagiri district, renowned for mugger crocodiles—one of India's three crocodilian species alongside saltwater and gharial crocodiles—have been experiencing continuous rainfall over the past few days.
As a result of heavy showers, the water levels in the rivers of the district have risen. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), rainfall is expected to persist in Ratnagiri district until July 2.
Earlier last week, an eight-year-old boy died in a crocodile attack in Odisha's Angul district. According to police reports, the boy had gone to the Mahanadi river at Tikarpada to wash up after using the toilet. As soon as he entered the river, a crocodile attacked him and pulled him underwater.
