New Delhi: On Tuesday, June 11, an IndiGo flight at the Tiruchirappalli International Airport was greeted by a customary water cannon salute on the special occasion of initiating operation at the newly integrated terminal. The video shows the plane moving on the runway when a water tanker shoots water in air. As per officials, the newly built terminal will commence operation on Tuesday with the staff members from the Airport Authority of India (AAI) were seen welcoming flyers at the new terminal.

The newly-built terminal was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this year. During the inauguration ceremony, PM Modi stated that this will bring fresh opportunities for investments, businesses, education, health, and tourism. The prime minister expressed contentment that the Trichy Airport, with its infrastructure, will showcase Tamil culture and heritage to the world.

"Over the next two days, I will be attending various programmes in Tamil Nadu, Lakshadweep and Kerala. The programmes will begin from Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu, where I will address the Convocation Ceremony of the Bharathidasan University. The new terminal building of the airport will also be inaugurated. At the same time, other development works will also be launched. These works will benefit several people," PM Modi's post read on X.

Tiruchirappalli International Airport Terminal:

The iconic Tiruchirappalli International Airport is now the second-largest airport in terms of international passenger traffic after Chennai in Tamil Nadu with built nearly about in 75000 sq m.

As per the airport's official release, the new terminal consists of 60 check-in counters, 5 Baggage Carousels, 60 Arrival Immigration Counters, and 44 departure emigration counters. Furthermore, a total of 100 artists were employed in furnishing the new terminal with artworks and the murals were installed within a span of 30 days.

This development aims to increase the capacity at the airport by two or three times and strengthening connectivity with Middle and East Asia along with other parts of the world. The newly built terminal at the Tiruchirappalli Airport has been at the cost of over Rs 1,100 crore and is a two-level facility features modern amenities. Thee newly terminal is capable of accommodating around 44 lakh passengers annually and some 3,500 passengers during busy periods.
