New Delhi: Explosions and red streaks across the night sky jolted multiple locations in Jammu and Kashmir, mere hours after India and Pakistan officially agreed on a ceasefire.

Omar Abdullah on Sudden Escalation

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed alarm over the sudden unrest.

“What the hell just happened to the ceasefire? Explosions heard across Srinagar!!!”* he posted on X (formerly Twitter). In a follow-up, he added, “This is no ceasefire,” revealing that air defence systems in Srinagar had been activated.

Multiple Cities Under Fire

Reports confirmed that Pakistan resorted to firing in several regions across Jammu & Kashmir and Punjab including Srinagar, Pathankot, Udhampur, Rajouri, Baramulla, and more. Red tracer fire was visible in the night sky, accompanied by loud explosions and widespread blackouts.

By 9 PM, cities such as Kathua, Baramulla, Firozpur, Srinagar, and Udhampur, along with Pathankot, witnessed power outages and air raid sirens, creating panic among civilians.

Ceasefire Confirmed, Then Broken

India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri earlier confirmed that a ceasefire agreement had been reached after Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) contacted New Delhi. The breakthrough came following a surprise announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump, who claimed the ceasefire was brokered “in a long night of talks mediated by the United States.”

Trigger: April 22 Terror Attack

The ceasefire came amid rising tensions, following the April 22 massacre in Pahalgam, where 26 tourists were killed by gunmen from The Resistance Front (TRF) — a group linked to Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba.

India’s Response: Operation Sindoor

In retaliation, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, executing precise airstrikes on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The operation resulted in the destruction of multiple terror launchpads and the elimination of key militant figures.

Instead of de-escalating, Pakistan responded with direct attacks on Indian military positions and civilian areas. In return, the Indian Armed Forces mounted a powerful counter-offensive, breaching Pakistani air defences and targeting eight military bases.
