New Delhi: Delhi Government announced its plans to relocate Tihar Jail to the outskirts of the national capital. The announcement was made in budget which was tabled by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that a total of Rs 10 crore has been allocated for the survey of land along with the consultancy services.
Tihar Jail is situated in West Delhi, with its campus surrounded by nearby areas such as Janakpuri, Hari Nagar, Mayapuri, Tilak Nagar, and Subhash Nagar. All of these locations are within a 3-4 km radius of the central jails.
The decision to relocate the jails was made due to their close proximity to these residential areas.
Tihar Jail is Asia's largest news prison complex with around 20,000 inmates against its sanctioned strength of 10,000.
In 1958, the prison was relocated from Delhi Gate to a site on the land of Tihar Village in the western part of New Delhi. Initially, only one Central Jail was established, with a capacity to house 1,273 prisoners.
Until 1966, the administrative control of Delhi Jails was under the Government of Punjab. However, in 1966, this responsibility was transferred to the Delhi Administration.
