'Your Daughter Died by Suicide': Did College Administration Attempt to Cover-Up Rape-Murder?

Kolkata: The father of the Kolkata Rape and Murder Case victim revealed the first intimation he got about his daughter's death.

According to him, someone from the college administration called him and told him that his ‘daughter died by suicide’.

The father of the trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital revisited the time when he got a call from the hospital and was informed about his daughter's death.

According to him, he got a call from the ‘Assistant Superintendent of Chest Medicine Department’ who told him, ‘Your daughter died by suicide’.

Following this call, the victim's father rushed to the hospital and that's when he saw the reality.

The ‘Assistant Superintendent of Chest Medicine Dept' had not named himself during the call.

Did RG Kar Medical College and Hospital Try to Cover-Up Rape and Murder?

This revelation by Abhaya's father have sparked allegations that the administration of the medical college and hospital had tried to cover-up the rape and murder of the trainee doctor by calling it a ‘suicide'.

During the investigation, on getting to know that the victim's family was informed of the murder as a ‘suicide’, the police took immediate action and summoned the Assistant Superintendent and Head of Department of the Chest Medicine wing of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. 

'Fell At Their Feet, Begged Them To Let Me See My Daughter'

While the father of the victim in Kolkata horror said that the college administration called their daughter's murder a ‘suicide’, her mother had another statement to make.

Abhaya's mother said that on reaching the hospital, she wasn't allowed to see her daughter, even when she fell to their feet and begged them.

In her words, “I fell at their feet, begging them to let me see my daughter. But they did not. No one understands what I went through. They let us see her at 2 pm.”

RG Kar Medical College and Hospital Reinstated Within 24 Hours of Quitting

Following backlash and outrage over lack of safety measures and protection which led to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the state-run hospital, Sandip Ghosh, the principal of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital had resigned from his post on August 12.

In his resignation, he had said, “I am getting defamed on social media. The deceased doctor was like my daughter. As a parent, I resign. I don't like that this should happen to anyone in future.”

However, within 24 hours of his resignation, he was reinstated.

Calcutta High Court Sends Medical College Professor on Leave

The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday mandated that Dr Sandip Ghosh, the former head of Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital take a leave of absence.

The court has scrutinized the state's handling of the case, including delays in informing the doctor's parents and the delivery of the body, and noted that the tragic death of the young woman appeared to have had little impact on Dr. Ghosh. 

"The Principal is the guardian of all doctors working there...if he doesn't show any empathy who will show? He should be at home not working anywhere...", said the Court.

All About Kolkata Rape and Murder Case

In the early hours of August 9, a 31-year-old trainee doctor's body was found in a semi-naked condition in the seminar hall of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

As per the autopsy reports, the victim was raped before being murdered, her neck was broken, multiple body parts including her private parts were bleeding and she was severely injured.

The accused, Sanjoy Roy, a civic worker, has been arrested and is in police custody till August 23, 2024. Sanjoy Roy has confessed to his crime and according to local media, he has no remorse or guilt for committing the heinous crime.

Investigation reveals that the accused has had a history of failed marriages and he used to watch a lot of porn; after confessing to the crime, Roy went on to say ‘Hang me if you want’.
