A Twitter user from Japan has shared a video demonstrating an optical illusion and the post has left the internet shocked!

Optical illusions are always interesting and have a record of trending on the Internet. In one of the recent incidents recorded, a Twitter user from Japan has shared a video demonstrating an optical illusion and the post has left the internet in wonder. Akiyoshi Kitaoka, a psychology professor at Ritsumeikan University in Japan, who is known to make illusion artworks, shared a video of one of his recent optical illusion demonstrating light perception. Since the video landed on the social media platform on August 12, netizens are going crazy over it. 

Kitaoka, who is an experimental psychologist, made the optical illusion by just using pieces of paper. The video shows how the small square shaped paper changes color as it moves from a lighter to a darker zone and vice versa. Sharing the video on Twitter, he said, "A demo of lightness perception"

The post has gone viral since then. Netizens shared the post extensively and it received around 1.12 million views. The jaw-dropping video has left the netizens to wonder how the simple piece of paper can change colour without any external modification.

While the color changing square was blogging the minds of the Twitter-verse, Kitaoka came up with the explanation and said that the illustration follows the theory of simultaneous contrast illusion.

Here's the explanation:

The square doesn't change colour in any situation, it's the background that makes it look like that. The square is neither black nor white, but grey in colour and stands between both the extremes. Its the luminosity that makes it appear different against different backgrounds. When the square is put in front of a lighter background it looks darker and again, when its put in front of a darker background it appears to be of a lighter colour.

 All the squares are of the same shade of grey, but they look different just because they are placed in differently illumined areas.
