Asoj Amavasya: The Election Commission of India (ECI) postponed the polling date for the Haryana Assembly elections from October 2 to October 5. The vote-counting date has also been shifted to October 8. The move was made to respect cultural traditions in view of the Asoj Amavasya festival.

What is Asoj Amavasya? What is its significance?

The move by the Election Commission of India comes after All India Bishnoi Mahasabha requested the body to reconsider the dates given that numerous families in Punjab, Rajasthan and Haryana observe the festival. As a part of it, members of the family usually travel to their native village Mukam, in Rajasthan. This is done during the Amavas in the month of “Asoj”.
