Another legend links to Ramayana, in which Lord Ram, Lord Vishnu’s seventh avatar, returned to Ayodhya on this day after killing Ravana and ending his 14-year vanvaas or exile. According to some stories, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj raised a guide following the Maratha victory over the Mughals, and the ritual has been carried on since then.
Gudi Padwa is traditionally celebrated by hosting a guide. The gudi is a flag-like structure constructed of bamboo, silk and cloth that is decorate with flowers, neem leaves and a copper or silver pot. It is displayed outside dwellings, on terraces, or at the front door and is regarded as a harbinger of good luck.
