Sawan Shivaratri 2026: It is one of the auspicious days for Hindus as it is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Sawan Shivaratri, also known as Masik Shivaratri, falls on Chaturdashi Tithi during Krishna Paksha. This year, it will fall on Monday, August 11. On this day, devotees observe a fast to seek Lord Shiva's blessings.

Sawan Shivaratri 2026: Significance

Sawan Shivaratri is mostly observed in North Indian states - Uttarakhand, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar, where the Purnimanta Lunar Calendar is followed. While states such as Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, where the Amanta Lunar Calendar is followed, observe Ashadha Shivaratri.

Famous Shiva temples in North India, such as Kashi Vishwanath and Badrinath Dham, arrange special pujas for devotees to attend. They perform Abhishekam on the Shiva Linga with water, milk, curd and honey. It is believed this impresses Lord Shiva and he bestows devotees with good health and prosperity.

Sawan Shivaratri 2026: Puja Vidhi

Devotees planning to observe a fast are advised to eat only one meal a day before Sawan Shivaratri, which is on Trayodashi. Then, on Shivaratri, devotees should wake up early, take a bath and wear fresh clothes. They should take a Sankalp to observe fast and to consume food the next day.

In the evening, devotees should also take a bath before performing puja.

To note: Shiva Puja should be done during the night, and devotees are advised to break the fast the next day after taking a bath, according to the shubh muhurat specified above. It generally falls between sunrise and before the end of Chaturdashi Tithi.
