The Diwali festivities seem to be all upon us. People are out shopping for new clothes, diya and mithhai. Here are a few desserts that one will enjoy both making and munching during this winter season:

Nolen gur payesh

Winters in West Bengal is famous for its koraishutir kochuri (puri made with a filling of mashed peas) and nolen gur (jaggery made from date palm). Although the state is already famous for its sweets, nolen gur is a different paradise altogether. Nolen gur payesh is one such delicacy which is typical of the winter season and will serve as the perfect dessert for one’s Diwali guests. It is a rice pudding flavoured with the jaggery made of date palm.

Gajar ka halwa

Although carrots are available now all the year round for one to make this dessert, nothing beats the fresh carrot during the winter season. This brightly coloured vegetable turns into one of the tastiest and richest desserts that should typically be enjoyed hot off the oven. Gajar ka halwa is made with grated carrot, milk or khoya and sugar. This is one of the most easy-to-make desserts that one can serve their family and guests this Diwali.

Shemai (Semiya)

Shemai is one of the easiest to make among all Indian desserts. Boiling milk, vermicelli and sugar is all one needs to make this tasty dessert. The texture of it is milky and soft and almost melts in one’s mouth. A bowl of shemai hot off the oven also serves as the perfect sweet dish for this Diwali.

Barfi

Barfi is a typical sweet dish served during the Diwali festival. This square piece of delicacy often topped with pistachios is most Indians’ guilty pleasure. It is made of milk, ghee and sugar. The mixture is then baked in the oven. One can cut it into squares when baked or personalise it by cutting it into some interesting shapes they like.

Gulab jamun

Although gulab jamun can be enjoyed any time, the Diwali festivity seems almost incomplete without hot gulab jamuns. This sweet delicacy is made out of maida, khoya, kesar and cardamoms. It is rolled into round balls and fried. It is then dipped in sugar syrup to make it into the soft and spongy dessert that everybody can’t help but love.
