Michelin stars came into being when a food guidebook entitled "The Michelin Guide" was created by the Michelin tire company. Michelin stars are a rating system that the Red Michelin Guide use to determine the quality of restaurants. The guide was originally designed in 1900 to show French drivers where there were local amenities like restaurants and mechanics. The rating system was first introduced as a single star in 1926, with the second and third stars being introduced in 1933. According to the Guide, one-star means "a very good restaurant," two stars are "excellent cuisine worth a detour," and three stars mean "exceptional cuisine worth a special trip. The list of starred restaurants is updated once every year.
