There is a variety of South Indian dishes made from grains and various ingredients. In South India, most of the breakfast dishes are rice-based and are made from scratch and are served fresh and warm. These dishes are served with veggies or meat curries, chutneys, stews etc. Here are some famous breakfast options that you could try for your early morning meal.

Dosa

A dosa is a cooked flat thin layered rice batter, originating from South India. It is made from a fermented batter and is somewhat similar to a crepe in appearance. Its main ingredients included in the dosa are rice and black gram ground together in a fine, smooth batter with a dash of salt.

Medu Wada

Medu Wada is a South Indian fritter made from Vigna mungo. It is usually made in the shape of a doughnut with a crispy exterior and soft interior. A popular food item in South India and Sri Lankan Tamil cuisines, Medu Wada is generally eaten for breakfast or as a snack.

Puttu

Puttu, or pittu, is a breakfast dish eaten in Kerala, parts of Sri Lanka, and Karnataka. Puttu means ‘portioned’ in Malayalam. It is made of ground rice layered with coconut in a cylindrical shape and often with a sweet or savoury filling on the inside.

Idiyappam

The Idiyappam is a rice dish which originates from South India and Sri Lanka. Idiyappam consists of rice flour pressed into a form of noodle and then steamed. The food is a popular Sri Lankan cuisine which has spread to Southeast Asia, where it is called putu mayang in Indonesia and putu mayam in Malaysia.
